Your Backyard in Weaverville Should Be the Best Room in Your House

Weaverville has grown a lot in the last decade. Families moving up from Asheville for more space, new builds going in along Reems Creek, older homes finally getting the updates they deserve. And almost every one of those updates starts with the same question: what do we do with the backyard?

Think about what yours could look like. Morning coffee while the fog burns off the ridgeline. Saturday grilling with the neighbors while the kids run around the yard. A screened porch with a built-in propane fire feature that keeps everyone outside through October because it blocks the wind and the bugs but not the view down the valley.

Weaverville gives you the weather and the scenery to live outside most of the year. The right deck is how you actually do it.

North Buncombe County Will Punish a Poorly Built Deck

Here is what most builders will not tell you. Weaverville sits at about 2,100 feet and north Buncombe County holds moisture in the soil longer than the south-facing slopes around Asheville. Moisture gets trapped between the decking boards and the joists, and if your builder does not protect the framing, the wood rots from the inside out. You will not see it until the boards sag or worse yet, your foot falls through the floor.

The terrain adds another layer. Downtown Weaverville has gentle residential lots, but move north toward Barnardsville or up into the hills and the slopes get serious. Shallow footings shift during freeze-thaw and pull the deck away from the house. And a lot of Weaverville homes were built in the '70s-90s with rim joists and sheathing that need to be inspected before you just bolt a new deck to them and hope it sticks.

That backyard you are picturing only stays that way if the deck underneath it is built for this specific climate and terrain. Most builders skip the steps that make that happen. We do not.

How We Make Sure Your Deck Lasts as Long as the Memories You Make on It

We tape every joist on every deck.

About $200 per project. It keeps moisture from rotting the framing. Nine years, 500+ builds, zero joist failures since 2016. Nobody else in the area does this as standard practice.

The only NADRA-certified deck builders in Buncombe County.

Search every contractor. You will not find another one. Our project managers Seth and Jason are trained to the national standard, not just building from habit.

We inspect before we attach.

Weaverville has a lot of older homes. Before we bolt a deck to your house, we check the rim joist and siding condition. If anything is soft or deteriorating, we address it first. We have seen what happens when other builders skip this step.

Awards you can verify.

2019 Pace Award for Best Outdoor Living Space. 2022 Stars Award for Best Addition Over $100,000. Both from the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains, juried by other builders.

Step 1: Free Site Visit -

We drive to your property (about 15 minutes from our Candler office), look at the terrain, check for setback issues and Steep Slope Overlay requirements, and talk through how you want to use the space.

Materials, labor, permits, timeline.

Step 3: We Handle Permits —

Weaverville deck permits go through Buncombe County Permits and Inspections. We know the process, the inspectors, and what gets approved without callbacks. Over 300 permits pulled since 2013.

Step 4: Build (1–3 Weeks) —We show up on time, keep the site clean, and give you direct cell numbers for your project manager. You talk to Jason or Seth, not a receptionist.

Step 5: Final Walkthrough -

We do not consider it done until you walk it with us and say you are happy.

Hendersonville Deck FAQs

How long does it take?

1-3 weeks of construction plus 2-3 weeks for permits through Buncombe County. Total: 4-8 weeks from contract to completion.

.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Even though Weaverville is its own town, building permits go through Buncombe County Permits and Inspections. Any deck over 30 inches above grade or attached to the house requires one. We handle the entire process.

Can I add a fire feature or screened porch?

Yes. Propane fire pits and screened porches are some of our most requested add-ons in the Weaverville area. We plan them into the original design so nothing feels like an afterthought.

Do you replace old decks?

Yes. We tear down the old structure, inspect the ledger board and house attachment, and build new. If existing footings are sound, we can reuse them.

How much does it cost to build a deck in NC?

North Carolina state averages put a basic pressure-treated wood deck at roughly $2,800 to $6,000 and composite decks at $6,000 to $13,000+ for standard sizes. Elevated builds, screened porches, and custom features push that higher. These are averages though, and every lot in Weaverville is different. We will give you the most accurate pricing once we have seen your job site and talked through your vision.

Is it cheaper to build a deck myself or hire a builder?

The material cost is lower, but DIY decks often end up costing more over time. Permit issues, undersized footings, and skipped moisture protection lead to repairs or full rebuilds within 5-10 years. A lot of the deck replacements we do in Weaverville started as DIY projects.

What is the best time of year to build a deck?

Late spring through fall is the best window for construction. But if you want a deck ready for summer, start planning in the winter. Permit timelines and builder schedules fill up fast once the weather breaks.

What accounts for most deck collapses?

Improper ledger board attachment and rotted structural framing cause the vast majority of deck failures. Both happen out of sight. We use lag bolts and flashing on every ledger connection and tape every joist to prevent exactly this. It is also why we inspect the rim joist on older Weaverville homes before attaching anything to them.

What areas do you serve near Weaverville?

All of north Buncombe County: Weaverville, Woodfin, Barnardsville, Reems Creek, Flat Creek, Ox Creek, and the northern sections of Asheville.
