4.8/5 (50+ Reviews) | 500+ Projects | NADRA Certified | A+ BBB Rating

Building decks in Asheville is not like building decks anywhere else. The slopes are steeper. The humidity is higher. And the views are worth building for.Since 2013, we have completed over 200 deck projects in Buncombe County alone. From hillside homes in North Asheville to flat lots in Arden, we have built decks on terrain that other contractors turn down.We are NADRA-certified deck builders with an A+ BBB rating. Every project includes joist tape protection, double flashing at the ledger board, and screw-only fastening. These details cost us more in materials and labor, but they prevent the rot and nail pops that ruin decks in mountain climates.

What Makes Deck Building in Asheville Different

Asheville sits in a high-humidity climate zone. Annual rainfall averages 47 inches. That moisture gets into deck framing and does not leave easily.

Slopes change everything. Most Asheville lots have grade changes. A deck that works on flat land in Raleigh requires a completely different approach on a hillside in Montford or a sloped lot in Fairview. We use helical piers when traditional footings are not practical and engineer beam spans for drops over 8 feet.

Frost heave is real. Asheville's freeze-thaw cycles shift footings that are not deep enough. Buncombe County code requires footings below the frost line, but code minimums are not always enough on north-facing slopes where frost penetrates deeper.

UV exposure fades decking faster. At 2,000+ feet elevation, UV radiation is stronger than coastal areas. We specify composite boards with enhanced UV protection and recommend wood stains with UV blockers for pressure-treated lumber.

Asheville Deck Building FAQs

Do I need a permit for a deck in Asheville?
Yes. Buncombe County requires permits for decks over 30 inches above grade or attached to the house. We handle all permit applications and inspections.

How long does it take to build a deck in Asheville?
Most decks take 1-3 weeks of construction time. Add 2-3 weeks for permits. Total timeline from quote to completion is typically 4-8 weeks.

What is the best decking material for Asheville's climate?
Composite decking handles moisture and UV better than wood. But pressure-treated lumber with proper maintenance still works well. We can walk you through the tradeoffs during your free consultation.

Do you build decks on steep slopes?
Yes. This is a specialty for us. We have built decks on slopes that other contractors refused. Helical piers, engineered beams, and proper bracing make hillside decks safe and stable.

What areas of Asheville do you serve?
We serve all of Buncombe County: Asheville, North Asheville, West Asheville, South Asheville, Montford, Kenilworth, Biltmore Forest, Weaverville, Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Fairview, Arden, and Woodfin.
