Quality Techniques
We use joist tape on every deck. It costs about $200 more per project, but we have never had a joist failure on any deck we have built since 2016. We use double flashing at every wall connection.
We use screw-only fastening. No nails. And we use picture frame trim boards for a clean finished edge. A lot of builders skip all of that.

What Makes Building in Waynesville Different
Waynesville sits at 2,600 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, higher than Asheville, closer to the Smoky Mountains, and right on the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The terrain here is steep. Very steep. Flat lots practically do not exist.
The elevation means hard freeze-thaw cycles from November through March. Snow and ice happen here when they might miss Asheville. Material selection matters more in Waynesville.
Composite decking holds up better than pressure treated lumber at this elevation because of the extra moisture and freeze-thaw stress.
Building in Waynesville also means dealing with Haywood County permits and inspectors. We have done the work here long enough to know what they look for. Any deck over 30 inches above grade or attached to the house needs a permit, engineered plans for certain spans, and multiple inspections.
The steepness of the terrain means we often use helical piers, engineered footings, and grade beams to anchor structures into mountain rock. We have built 30-foot elevated decks and screened porches here that required specialized foundation work. Most builders in the area have not done that type of project.
