Why Asheville Homeowners Are Switching to Composite
Every spring, we get the same call from homeowners in North Asheville and Biltmore Forest. They stained their wood deck last year. It already looks rough. The boards are splitting. The color faded before the leaves even changed. They want something that actually lasts this time.
That's how most people end up looking for a composite deck builder in Asheville. They're done spending weekends sanding and staining. They want a deck that looks good in five years without all the work.
Pegram Builders has installed over 500 composite and wood decks across Western North Carolina since 2013. We're NADRA certified, A+ rated with the BBB, and we carry $2 million in liability coverage. If you want a composite deck built right for mountain weather, we're the crew homeowners in Buncombe, Henderson, and Haywood counties call first.

Trex Deck Installation
Trex is the brand most Asheville homeowners ask about, and for good reason. We've been doing Trex deck installation across WNC for over a decade now. The Transcend and Enhance lines hold up well against the rain, humidity, and temperature swings we get up here in the mountains.
One thing people don't realize about Trex — the warranty only holds up if the deck is installed to spec. That means proper gapping for expansion, correct fastener patterns, and ventilation underneath. We've seen DIY Trex jobs in Fairview and Arden where the boards buckled because nobody accounted for how much composite moves with temperature changes.
We follow Trex's installation specs to the letter. Every deck we build passes inspection on the first visit. Zero failed inspections in 12 years.
A typical 12x16 Trex Transcend deck on a flat lot in Asheville runs about $14,000 to $18,000 installed. Bigger builds, steep lots, or elevated designs cost more — but we'll give you an exact number before any work starts.
TimberTech Deck Construction
TimberTech is the other composite brand we install alot of. Their AZEK line is a full PVC board — not wood composite — which means it handles moisture even better then standard composite. For homeowners near the French Broad or up in the higher elevations around Black Mountain where things stay damp, TimberTech AZEK is usually what we reccomend. We also install TimberTech's PRO Legacy and Landmark lines. They cost less then AZEK but still outperform pressure treated wood by a long shot. If your trying to get composite quality without the top-shelf price, these are solid options.

Composite Deck Installation — How We Do It Different
Most contractors treat composite the same as wood. Slap the boards down, screw them in, call it done. Composite decking needs different techniques and we've learned that the hard way over 500+ projects.
Here's what we do on every composite deck installation that most builders skip:
Joist Tape.
A protective membrane goes on top of every joist before decking goes down. Water pools where screws penatrate the framing. Joist tape keeps that moisture from rotting out your substructure. Your composite boards might last 25 years, but if the framing underneath rots in 10, your deck is still falling apart.
Hidden Fasteners.
Most of our composite builds use hidden fastener systems instead of face screwing. No screw heads on the surface. Cleaner look. And the boards can expand and contract without fighting against a screw thats holding them too tight.
Double Flashing.
Where the deck meets your house is where water problems start. We flash it twice — once at the ledger board, again at the siding transition. In a place like Asheville where we get 47 inches of rain a year, this detail matters.
Proper Ventilation.
Composite needs airflow underneath or moisture gets trapped. We make sure theres adequate ventilation on every build, especially on ground level decks and builds tucked into hillsides — which is half the lots in Asheville.
What our Asheville Customers Say

Why Asheville Homeowners Choose Pegram Builders
You can find a dozen contractors in the Asheville area who'll install a composite deck. The difference is in what happens underneath the boards — the stuff you can't see once the deck is finished.
We're the only NADRA certified deck builder in Western North Carolina. That's a national certification from the North American Deck and Railing Association — not a weekend seminar certificate. It means we've demonstrated competency in deck safety, building codes, and best practices. Ask the next contractor you talk to if they're NADRA certified. Most won't know what it is.
We carry $2 million in liability insurance. The state minimum is $1 million. We double it because we stand behind our work. We're a licensed NC general contractor, we handle all permits and inspections, and we give fixed-price written quotes. The number we quote is the number you pay. No surprise add-ons. No "well, we found something" upcharges halfway through the build.
Zero failed inspections in 12 years. Every deck passes on the first visit. Thats not luck — thats the result of doing things right from the start.
Looking for something specific? We also build elevated and multi-level decks for steep mountain lots, install cable railing systems and deck lighting, and offer deck repair and resurfacing services if your existing deck needs work.
